When someone asks for your Big 3, they're asking for the three cornerstone placements of your birth chart: your sun sign, your moon sign, and your rising sign. One person, three signs, three different layers of you — and the combination is specific enough that sharing it feels closer to a personality profile than a party fact. Your sun sign — the identity

The sign the Sun occupied on your birthday, and the one you've always known. The sun sign describes your core self: vitality, purpose, ego, the qualities you're growing into across a lifetime. It changes only monthly, which makes it the broadest brushstroke of the three — true of you, and of everyone born within weeks of you.

Your moon sign — the inner world

The sign the Moon occupied at your birth — and because the Moon changes signs every two and a half days, this one is far more individually yours. The moon sign governs your emotional nature: how you feel, what you need to feel safe, how you love and self-soothe and behave when no one's watching. Your rising sign — the first impression

Also called the ascendant: the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the minute you were born. It's the vibe strangers meet before they know you: the energy of your entrances, your instinctive social manner, even (astrologers say) something of your appearance. How the three work together

A tidy way to hold it: the rising sign is the front door, the sun sign is the house, and the moon sign is the bedroom. Strangers see the door; friends live in the house; only intimates — and you — know the innermost room. When the three signs harmonize, people experience you as consistent all the way through. When they contrast sharply, you contain multitudes: a fiery door on a practical house with a tender room at the center. Neither is better. How to find each one

• Sun sign: birth date alone. You almost certainly know it.
• Moon sign: birth date and birthplace — plus birth time only if you were born on a sign-change day. No birth time? Usually still findable.
• Rising sign: the demanding one. It changes roughly every two hours, so it genuinely requires a reasonably accurate birth time plus location. Without a time, an honest answer is "one of a few possibilities" — be wary of any calculator that pretends otherwise.
