30 Full Moon Journal Prompts for Release & Gratitude
Everything the new moon planted in the dark now stands in full light — the wins, the weights, and the things whose time is done. The full moon's gift is seeing clearly enough to say thank you, and brave enough to let go.
The full moon is the cycle's bright noon: Sun and Moon face each other across the sky, and the night is as lit as it gets. Lunar tradition reads it as the month's moment of truth — culmination, revelation, high tide of feeling (full-moon restlessness is a real and ancient complaint), and the turning point after which the light begins to release. The prompts below follow that arc: see, thank, release, integrate. If you set intentions at the new moon, tonight is when you read them back.
First, see clearly
Full light is for honest looking — at the month exactly as it's been:
- What has actually happened since the new moon — not the plan, the reality?
- What came to fruition this cycle, even partially, even imperfectly?
- What did this month show me about myself that I couldn't see two weeks ago?
- Where did my energy truly go — and does that match where I said it would?
- What feeling has been running high this week, and what is it illuminating?
- What truth have I been circling that tonight I could just write down?
- If this month were a photograph, what's in the center of the frame?
Then, give thanks
- What three things from this cycle am I genuinely grateful for?
- Who showed up for me this month — and have I told them?
- What did my body carry me through these past weeks?
- Which small, ordinary moment from this month deserves to be remembered?
- What ability or strength of mine did this cycle rely on?
- What almost went wrong but didn't — and what quiet thanks does that deserve?
- What's something I have right now that a past version of me wished for?
Now, release
The moon's light wanes from here; lunar tradition says let some things wane with it:
- What am I ready to release under this full moon — habit, grudge, worry, or weight?
- What expectation of this month didn't happen — and can I set the disappointment down?
- Which story about myself has expired, even though I keep retelling it?
- What am I holding for someone else that was never mine to hold?
- What would forgiving — them, or myself — actually free up in me?
- What "should" have I been carrying that I hereby retire?
- Complete the sentence: "As the light decreases, I let go of…"
- What's one physical thing I could clear from my space tomorrow as a token of this?
Finally, integrate
- What lesson from this cycle do I want to carry into the next one?
- What worked so well this month that it deserves to become a habit?
- What boundary did this month teach me I need?
- How do I want the waning half of this cycle to feel — and what would support that?
- What needs finishing before the next new moon, and what gets gracefully dropped?
- What advice would tonight's clear-sighted me give to next new moon's beginning me?
- What am I proud of that no one else would know to congratulate me for?
- Complete the sentence: "This full moon, I can finally see that…"
A simple 15-minute full moon ritual
The mirror of the new moon ritual, in brighter light: if the sky is clear, glance at the actual moon first — it earns the name of the practice. Breathe for a minute, then take one prompt from each section — one seeing, one thanks, one release, one integration — and write freely for three or four minutes each. Traditional close: read your release line aloud, then physically mark it — cross it out, tear that strip of paper, or simply shut the notebook with intention. Done. The practice's power, as ever, is in the returning.

Frequently asked questions
What should I journal about on a full moon?
The four movements above: seeing the month clearly, gratitude for what came to fruition, releasing what's finished or heavy, and integrating the lesson before the cycle wanes.
Why is the full moon about letting go?
Because the light wanes from here — the cycle turns from building to clearing, and the tradition mirrors the sky: whatever the bright peak revealed as done gets consciously set down.
Does the exact night matter?
A day or two either side works fine. Returning each cycle is what compounds — not split-second timing.
