Journal by the Moon
30 New Moon Journal Prompts for Intention Setting
The sky goes dark, the page goes blank — and both are invitations. The new moon is the zodiac's monthly permission slip to begin again.
In lunar tradition, the new moon — when the Moon sits between Earth and Sun, invisible in the night sky — marks the start of the cycle: the planting dark before anything shows. Journaling with it is one of the simplest moon practices there is: no supplies, no ceremony required, just fifteen quiet minutes and a few honest answers. Below are thirty prompts arranged the way the energy actually moves — clear, then plant, then step — plus a short ritual to hold them.
First, clear the slate
Beginnings need room. Before setting anything new, spend a few lines emptying your hands:
- What am I still carrying from last month that was never mine to carry?
- What finished recently that I haven't yet let myself call finished?
- What have I been forcing that keeps asking not to happen?
- Which worry, if I set it down tonight, would change how tomorrow feels?
- What am I ready to stop apologizing for?
- What would I clear out of my week if no one would be disappointed?
- Complete the sentence: "The last cycle taught me…"
Then, listen for what wants to grow
- If this month were a blank page, what's the first sentence I'd want written on it?
- What have I been quietly wanting more of — and quietly not asking for?
- Where in my life do I feel a beginning already stirring?
- What would I start this month if I trusted myself completely?
- Which part of me hasn't had enough room lately — and what would give it room?
- What does "enough" look like for me this month: enough rest, enough money, enough connection?
- Who do I want to be more of by the next new moon?
- What am I most hopeful about right now, even if it feels fragile to say?
Set the intentions
Now narrow. One to three, written as if already in motion:
- This cycle, I am giving my energy to…
- The single change that would matter most this month is…
- My intention for how I feel this month (not just what I do) is…
- My intention for one relationship in my life is…
- My intention for my body and rest is…
- The thing I will protect time for, even in a busy week, is…
- By the full moon, I would love to be able to say…
Choose the first steps
Intentions grow legs here — small ones on purpose:
- The smallest possible first step toward my main intention is…
- What can I do in the next 48 hours that my full-moon self will thank me for?
- What will I say no to this month so my yes has room?
- Who could support this intention — and how will I actually tell them?
- What obstacle is most likely to show up, and what's my gentle plan for it?
- How will I remind myself of this intention mid-month, when the dark-moon clarity fades?
- What will I do tonight, however small, to mark the beginning?
- Complete the sentence: "This month, I am beginning…"
A simple 15-minute new moon ritual
If you'd like a container for the prompts: dim the lights and settle somewhere comfortable — the dark sky is the theme, so low light suits it. Breathe slowly for a minute before writing anything. Then take one prompt from each section above — one clearing, one listening, one intention, one first step — and write freely, without editing, for three or four minutes each. Close by reading your intention aloud once. That's the whole ritual; its power is in the returning, cycle after cycle, not in elaborateness.

Frequently asked questions
What should I journal about on a new moon?
Beginnings: clearing what's finished, naming what you want to grow, setting one to three intentions, and choosing small first steps — the four movements the prompts above follow.
When exactly should I do it?
Within a day or two of the exact new moon; the evening of it is the classic. Consistency across cycles matters far more than hitting the precise hour.
How many intentions should I set?
One to three, written specifically. The cycle is only four weeks; focus beats volume every time.
What about the full moon?
That's the other bookend — culmination, gratitude, and release. Its prompts live here: 30 full moon journal prompts.
